Women’s Basketball Splits in Dubuque
The Trinity Bible College Lady Lions traveled to Dubuque, Iowa this past weekend for the Emmaus Tip Off Classic! The Lady Lions faced off against Emmaus University and Grace Christian University.
On Friday, November 7th, the Lady Lions tipped off against the Emmaus Eagles. The Lady Lions came into the game short-handed, missing five players who also play volleyball for Trinity. Nevertheless, the Lady Lions were hoping to come into this game and still be able to compete while only having seven players total. The Emmaus Eagles came out swinging, connecting on four straight threes, taking an early 12-0 lead. The Lady Lions tried to battle back, but the Emmaus Eagles depth and hot shooting was too much to overcome for the short-handed Lady Lions. The final score was 90-44. Madeline Berkey led the way with 16 points and 15 rebounds. Addy Warneke chipped in 13 points and 7 rebounds, and Julie Hull put in 11 points and dished out 4 assists.
On Saturday, November 8th, the Lady Lions looked to get a bounce-back win against the Grace Christian Tigers. The Lady Lions came out with a great first defensive possession with a tipped pass by sophomore center Madeline Berkey, and then stolen by freshman forward Addy Warneke. The ladies raced down the floor and got a kick out three pointers by freshman Julie Hull, assisted by freshman guard Hannah Fischer. The Lions went on an 8-2 run, taking the lead 10-2 after Addy Warneke finished a layup on the left block.
The Lions went on another 8-2 run in the second quarter and took a 16-4 lead after a made three from Hannah Fischer on the right wing. The ladies maintained their lead for the remainder of the quarter and went into halftime leading 29-17.
In the second half, the Lions came out looking to extend the lead they built in the first half. With about four minutes left in the third quarter, the Lady Lions were up 34-21. The Tigers kept battling and were able to cut the lead to seven with the third quarter score being 37-30.
In the fourth quarter, the Tigers continued their run from the third quarter and cut the Trinity lead to just one point, 40-39 with 6:30 left on the clock. The Lady Lions were able to get some stops and scores down the stretch, including big free throws from Julie Hull and Hannah Fischer. The Lady Lions would go on to win 52-48.
Berkey led the team with 13 points and 15 rebounds, giving her a double-double. Addy Warneke and Julie Hull each finished with 12 points and 4 rebounds each. This win moves the Lady Lions to 1-1 on the season, and they will be back on the court next weekend in Canada to face NIAC opponent University of Saint Boniface!
